The Hills Road project in Cambridge involved redeveloping a key site identified as an area of major change in the Cambridge Local Plan, located next to the Grade II Registered Park & Garden, Botanic Garden, and the non-designated Flying Pig pub. The townscape, heritage and visual assessment work was crucial, forming part of the Environmental Statement and guiding discussions with Cambridge City Council.
Through detailed analysis, the assessment helped shape the development’s form and architectural expression. This enhanced the local context while transforming a negative townscape area into a high-quality development with an improved public realm in a gateway into Cambridge.
The quality of the townscape assessment was specifically praised by the Council’s Landscape Officer, who noted the thoroughness of the viewpoint selection and analysis of the impact on key visual receptors.
